The History of Beni Ourain Weaving
The ancestral home of the Beni Ouarain is located in the beautiful Middles Atlas Mountains. It is believed that they initially settled in the small mountain range known as Jebel Bouiblane during the 9th century. In the area, they continued a more ancient tradition of flat-woven products. Their carpets of thick weave were made to protect their users from the severe and unpredictable climate of the region.
Carpets were used for numerous purposes. Berber rugs would be placed on floors in their homes. The more elaborately designed rugs could also be used as wall decorations. Rugs of smaller sizes were used as covers for couches. They make great bed sheets. There were a lot of applications. Rugs that are specifically designed for hendira have a smooth woven side and a very long looped side. They were used by women to wear shawls during the coldest conditions.
Perfect for Any Weather
Carpets are made of the soft and dense wool side and an even smoother weave side. In the cold winter months, the carpet is turned over to reveal its shaggy wool pile. People who lived in nomadic communities could benefit greatly from the highly efficient insulation it gave. In summer, when temperatures are warmer, the carpet is adjusted to reveal its smoother side. This is because the dense insulation is able to withstand the heat and heat during the day.
Woven Wool Designs
Beni Ourain carpets produced today have designs that are from the past. Traditional designs are usually created using so-called “live wool’. It is the type of wool taken from a live sheep rather than the sheepskin. It is either Moroccan or comes from New Zealand. It is the latter. Moroccan wool is soft and more silk-like. Wool from New Zealand wool is somewhat soft.
Berber Rugs can be found in almost every color of the rainbow. Golds, reds, and rich browns are available in a variety of rugs that belong to various ethnic groups. Beni Ourain tribesmen were far from the main trade routes. Their designs were unaffected by other styles for a long time. The designs are usually made exclusively in unbleached or white wool and delicately executed black geometric designs.
Proud Weavers
A long-running history in an unhospitable climate led to high-quality Berber rugs. It was only in this kind of climate that you could encourage native weavers to create the heavy and thick pile of a rug of high quality. Through time, every design was handed through the hands of a weaving master to pupils. The majority of weavers of today are women. The proud women continue their traditional ways while offering assistance to their communities. They are proud of the work they do to the tradition of black and white patterns.
Beni Ourain rugs have two primary dichromatic design styles. They can weave perfectly coordinated geometric patterns. There are black borders that run along the edges of white spaces. Some simply lay straight lines freely in this white space. Others flow freely. They begin as one form but then naturally transform into different shapes or shapes.
Modern Minimalist Appeal
