How to Tell the Difference Between Contemporary and Modern Home Furnishings and Decor Design

These two terms are frequently used by professionals. Because contemporary design is trending right now, you’ll find that contemporary and “mid-century modern” could be described as modern because contemporary style is constantly evolving to meet the demands of the moment and cannot be tied to a specific design time frame. It’s quite popular today, which means that it draws inspiration from a variety of time periods to produce an aesthetic and design that is influenced by different styles and eras.

Contemporary Design

The contemporary style is trending and is a hot trend in the present. Homes that have a contemporary style are typically more relaxed than traditional or modern-style homes. The design creates a sense of openness or a spacious layout. For instance, living rooms or dining room is integrated into the kitchen to create a simultaneously comfortable living space. Modern design tends to focus on neutral colors and add a splash of color by using accessories throughout the rooms. For instance, you can add chair cushions or accent pieces that have vibrant colors or striking designs. Furniture with sleek straight lines and smooth surfaces, without any carving or embellishments, is considered to be contemporary. A few of the materials used in this style are transparent or frosty glass or chrome and stainless steel. The majority of furniture is made from linen, cotton silk, silk, or wool to add textural elements to your designs. The most popular elements in this design are natural materials like fir, cedar, or even stone. If you are adding modern lighting to your home, you’ll see clean lines, metallic surfaces, and straight lines. They’ll be complemented by bright shades.

Modern and “Mid-Century Modern” Design

Modern Design, also known as “mid-century modern,” is a style of design that dates back to a particular time period that is uncluttered, simple, and elegant. Modern spaces embrace simplicity. Furniture design is sleek, with clean curves and geometric shapes, replacing distracting design elements. The use of a “modern” style typically creates the room feel more spacious thanks to big windows and a seamless design from indoors to outside. Furniture can showcase the natural metal and wood to allow the natural look to be seen. The most common material used in this style is plywood and plastic, as well as polished metal. Warm earthy colors in saturated colors tones are typically showcased using the woods that are used in the furniture. When it comes to flooring, there are clean floors that have an additional area rug to bring color and character. The majority of modern furniture is minimalist, and you should provide ample space between the furniture pieces.

In recent times, these two terms for design have been frequently used interchangeably and mixed, thanks to popular TV shows and others. A growing number of people are watching design-oriented programs and TV shows set in the 1950s and early 1960s, which has brought that style and elegance back. It’s all about interpretation. It is a personal vision. In my opinion, a balanced mix of both styles creates an extremely spacious and comfortable space and also looks beautiful and inviting. The designs are comforting and relaxing and make any space feel as if it’s the home of your dreams. In some instances, I’ve even heard the term “mid-century modern” referred to as vintage.
